During the turbulent moment, Peggy did everything in her power to learn any information she could about what was going on. It was completely inexplicable why he had not written to her throughout this long period of time. It was through letters that the pair first got to know each other and courted one another; there was no need for him to stop communicating with her in this manner at this point. There was complete anarchy in the military, and everything was terribly unorganized. Peggy was informed that her husband will soon be returning to the United States by a message that she got from the Army’s Supreme Head Quarters in France. The rumor turned out to be false, and she quickly realized that in order to get in touch with him once more, she would have to do it on her own initiative if she wanted to do so.

The entire process was like being on a rollercoaster of emotions, and there was no sign that it would finish any time soon. Peggy received word through telegram on the seventh of July that Billie had been reported missing. Peggy sobbed, but she quickly got herself up and made the decision that she was going to find out the truth about what had taken place. Peggy sensed that something wasn’t quite right, so she read the telegram several times before realizing that the information it contained was wrong. She received handwritten letters from Billie dated after the telegram was sent; the letters made it very evident that he was still alive and in good health. Peggy did not waste any time and hurried immediately to the telegraph office, where she was greeted by a message informing her that the date was incorrect and that Billie had, in fact, vanished from the line of duty on July 17th. Something in her instincts warned her that things wasn’t quite right…
