Females Were Bystanders
During the course of the conversation, Peggy mentioned how much she dreaded the day when he would be called up. Peggy went over the situation in which the wives of the men were kept up in a motel while their husbands were detained in Tallahassee. At the hotel, the wives were given instructions that directed them to return home and disclose the whereabouts of their husbands with no one at all, including their immediate families. As a result, Peggy did the same thing as the other ladies did, which was to say goodbye to her husband and pray that he and the other men would get at their destination without incident. As this event took place, Billie and Peggy had just recently realized that they had been married for only six weeks, which was a brief yet joyous period of time for them.

The women went about their daily lives while keeping the secrets they were required to keep to themselves, after returning home to their own houses. They started getting word one at a time that their loved ones had arrived safely as time wore on. This was one of the final pieces of information that Peggy would obtain about the situation… For the remainder of the war, Peggy never obtained any new intelligence or information regarding her spouse in any form. Her husband, Lieutenant Billie Harris, had disappeared without a trace, and his devoted wife had no idea where he was. There were significant problems with bureaucracy and organization inside the army, which resulted in information being frequently miscommunicated and misplaced.
