ALS
But what was the point of the Ice Bucket Challenge in the first place? It was, after all, intended to raise awareness of ALS, also identified as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In July 2014, the activity began to receive widespread attention, and it quickly gained viral status. In fact, 17 million ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos were shared on Facebook in September 2014 alone.
Even Famous People Did It
The campaign was so well-received that it drew a number of high-profile participants. That’s right, celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, Lady Gaga, and Oprah Winfrey, as well as former US President George W. Bush, took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Barack Obama, the president at the time, was also selected. Despite the fact that he ultimately decided not to participate, he did donate $100 to the cause.
