Queen Elizabeth I

From 1558 to 1603, Queen Elizabeth I was the ruler of England and Ireland. She was born to King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. After the annulment of their marriage, Elizabeth became illegitimate. It took a couple of years before she finally took over the throne. There were plenty of paintings that showed what she looked like. Mat Collishaw, however, decided to take matters into his own hands in 2018.

What Queen Elizabeth I Really Looked Like

The end result of the project was this hyper-realistic animatronic mask that had a mouth that opens and eyes that followed you around. A mirror is connected to this mask, which is on display at the Queen’s House. Right across it is the Armada portrait that depicts Elizabeth at her prime even though she was 55 during the time it was painted. The mask shows what the Virgin Queen looked like back then. Interestingly, it is not that different from the portraits!
