Harvey, in all of his thoroughness, discovered that the residents of the town had disobeyed the edict of the Germans in order to give Billie a ceremonial heroic funeral, one that he had genuinely merited. This was done in order to honor the sacrifices that Billie had made. The legacy of Billie has been honored throughout all of these years and decades, and they have acknowledged that he was the one who saved them. They do this three times a year as a way to honor Billie by marching down the street that is named after her, which is Place Billie D. Harris.

Because the citizens of the town did not know whether or not Billie had relatives or whether or not anyone would ever come to discover him, they continued to decorate his gravestone in order to remember and cherish his life and memory. The majority of the people thought of Billie as their very own personal superhero in real life. When he talks about Billie, the mayor of the town almost always gets emotional and starts crying. They will be grateful to Billy for the rest of their lives for that one decisive moment when he chose to prioritize the safety of others over his own life. Peggy used to send flowers to her husband’s grave ten times a year in order to memorialize him and pay tribute to the time that she and her husband had spent together.
