Thankfully, ever since the threat of war breaking out had disappeared, most of the rockets were disabled. Almost all the nuclear shelters in the Tucson area were destroyed or sealed at the beginning of the 1980s when the relations between the US and the USSR were calming down. John’s shelter was built back in 1961, just around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis – the closest the US has ever gotten to nuclear war. This shelter John had was clearly a historical relic. John posted his findings to Reddit and soon after, his story went viral. He was so proud of his new finding and he was sure there were others like him. Thanks to his post’s popularity, he was connected with others in the Tucson area who also had bomb shelters on their properties. Sims’ friends had suggested that he turn the shelter into a wine cellar or a cigar bar. However, John had other ideas in mind. He wanted to begin collecting Cold War memorabilia and furniture to bring the relic back to life. We still want to know, how did he plan on doing that?
