You may or may not have noticed the half mast flag in the opening credits of Gilligan’s Island. It turns out that this was a tribute to John F. Kennedy. The crew just finished filming the pilot episode on the same day JFK was shot.

Sherwood Schwartz, creator of the Gilligan’s Island confessed that he hated Newton Minow, the head of the Federal Communications Commission or FCC. As a joke, he named the shipwreck after him, thus the S.S. Minnow. Quite the joke, eh?
