Pretending to sleep
Abby acted as though she was sleeping while she tried to keep her eyes closed and maintain as much stillness as she could. She sensed the warmth of his breath on her cheek as he glanced over the side of her face to determine if she was actually sleeping. He wanted to be sure that she was asleep. He yielded ground little by little and eventually went home to spend the night in his own bedroom.

The argument between Abby and her father started early the following morning. While she was aware of it, her mother was not aware of it. Why would she do that? Only Abby was aware of what she had heard coming from the shed all through the night since she had spent the entire night sleeping. Throughout the rest of the day, she was preoccupied by the horrific noise that she had heard earlier.
