Many soy sauces in China include the carcinogen 4-methylimidazole, which has been related to the development of cancer. This was discovered in 2016. Despite the producers’ claims that the cost was low, the Hong Kong Consumer Council took the issue seriously.

Tapioca pearls are another food to avoid when visiting China. The product contained aspolychlorinated biphenyls, a chemical associated with immunological, reproductive, neurological, and endocrine system malfunction as well as cancer development.
