Of course it was no surprise that Retton would achieve greatness under the watchful eyes of the Károlyis. At the 1984 Olympics, Mary Lou Retton successfully became the first woman outside of Eastern Europe to win the individual all-around gold. She did so by overtaking Romania’s star gymnast, Ecaterina Szabo.
Keeping Distance
Even though Nadia didn’t hold a grudge against Béla, her former coach, she felt a pang of hurt. And to make matters worse, Romania’s strict government forbade Nadia from interacting with Béla whatsoever. She knew that she had to do something and get out of Romania.
