During his stint in the military, Billie had completed approximately 100 separate missions. He had been granted the privilege and permission to return home, and July 1944 was the month in which this was meant to take place. It would appear that when Billie got the news that he would be going back to his much-loved wife, he was overjoyed and completely overcome with happiness. Nevertheless, Destiny had other plans. Peggy received a letter from Billie informing her of his arrival and expressing his delight at the prospect of seeing her again. The vessel that Billie was about to board was full with injured service members in need of medical attention. Because there was simply no room on the ship for even one more service member, he was required to step aside so that his fellow passengers could make the journey back to the United States before he did. It would be several weeks before another ship arrived, and during that time he would be forced to wait once more. The day had finally come for Billie to begin his journey back home, but he was advised once more that he would need to wait. This one event was the turning point in Billie’s life…
