Selleck went to the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship. However, he decided to work as a model on the side to make ends meet. At the time, he took up Business administration. However, his drama coach pushed him to try his hand at acting. Well, you can probably figure out how valuable this piece of advice was! Selleck agreed and started to study under Milton Katselas of the Beverly Hills Playhouse.

This is rather surprising. Did you know that he served in the US Army from 1967 to 1973? During his time in service, he was posted with the 160th Infantry Regiment in the California Army National Guard. The actor talked about it this way: “I am a veteran, I’m proud of it. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”
