When you’re going diving, there’s no telling what you might run into or find while you’re under the water. From seeing amazing creatures and underwater scenery to hidden treasures that can be discovered, you can never really know what will happen. In this case, these divers were in for a major surprise they were most definitely not expecting when they were putting on their diving gear.
Unexpected Appearance
When Grayson and his diving partner went under the water that fateful day, something caught their eye. No, it wasn’t ancient wreckage or a treasure that they noticed. While there were unique flora and fauna to look at, something else stopped them in their tracks.

Unexpected Appearance
Hidden Gems Of The Atlantic
The divers were taken by surprise when they caught sight of two Atlantic gray seals who appeared seemingly out of nowhere. There are people who would get scared experiencing this, seeing as seals aren’t always friendly as they’re made out to be.

Hidden Gems Of The Atlantic
Instincts
The divers had good instincts and were well trained on the ocean as well as its inhabitants. These instincts kicked in. By that point, the divers knew they had no choice about what they would do next.

Instincts
Nothing
Divers are typically taught not to disturb animals in their natural habitat. Especially when the results can be more disastrous for the diver rather than the animal itself. When the divers noticed the seals approaching, they did their very best to stay as calm as possible. They had been spotted…

Nothing
Spotted
Even though most seals have a reputation among divers of being curious and playful, some have been said to become aggressive with humans who seem threatening to them. Grayson was trying not to seem like a threat. After all, the divers were invading their habitat…

Spotted
Still And Calm
Grayson and his diving partner remained calm. The two seals began approaching them slowly. The divers stayed as still as possible, but they knew this would be a wonderful sight to get on camera, so they took one out.

Still And Calm
Quickly Approaching
Another thing seals are known for is swooping in from behind or appearing in the middle of thick kelp forests. The divers were near a forest just like that. They kept the camera rolling to see what could happen next.

Quickly Approaching
Into The Unknown
As is known, nature is very unpredictable, especially when it comes to the ocean which is the largest natural ecosystem in the world. There is still so much about the oceans that humans don’t know about, so divers don’t really know what to expect whenever they go into the ocean. These divers were about to have a one in a million experience!

Into The Unknown
Once In A Lifetime
Gary Grayson is known for his diving photography, but this time it was he who got to have the once-in-a-lifetime experience. As nervous as he was he knew staying calm might just pay off. He definitely didn’t expect the seals to do what they did next.

Once In A Lifetime
Seen By Millions
It just so happened to be that Grayson dove with a friend who was there to get the entire counter on camera. Little did they know, however, that they would be getting incredible footage that millions of people all over the world would almost lose their minds once it went viral on YouTube.

Seen By Millions
Up Close And Personal
It seemed like a miracle at the time, but the seals swam closer and closer to the divers as they were continuing to film. In fact, they got so close that the famous video starts with a seal right near the camera.

Up Close And Personal
Just Babies
The adorable seals made their way to the divers, and before long, Grayson and his partner realized the seals were just pups! Once they saw this, they knew how important it was to stay completely still.

Just Babies
Pups
They wanted the baby seals to feel safe enough to linger around. Since they were young, the seals were more likely to be skittish, with a higher chance of them swimming away. The divers did there best to keep movements at a minimum.

Pups
Incredible Opportunity
The two divers weren’t about to miss out on this incredible opportunity to capture these wild animals up close. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the seals to warm up to Grayson and his friend. The seals starting circling the divers, almost like they were putting on some kind of show.

Incredible Opportunity
Charismatic Creatues
Seals normally are known as inquisitive and playful animals, but what makes them more peculiar is the fact that each one has a very different personality. It wasn’t long before one of the seals took action.

Charismatic Creatures
Like No Other Dive
For the most part, seals are generally curious and friendly. Otherwise, some can be standoffish and skittish. Knowing this, Grayson and his friend needed to be cautious about what they were dealing with to protect themselves since it could have gone either way.

Like No Other Dive
Experienced And Skilled
Despite the fact that they had plenty of experience, the divers were apprehensive about the outcome of the encounter. Getting so close to a wild seal wasn’t something they’d experienced in the past. What happened next was unbelievable…

Experienced And Skilled
Puppy-Like
Soon enough, the seals revealed themselves to be the curious types. The more they circled and closed in on the divers, the friendlier they got. The divers couldn’t help but be relieved and excited about this turn of events.

Puppy-Like
Playful Babies
They were going to have a positive encounter after all. The seals were just like water dogs in a sense. They even had adorable puppy-like eyes that just want to play. However, the divers couldn’t have guessed what would happen next.

Playful Babies
Close Encounter
Grayson and his friend could hardly believe what was happening to them. The seals were so close to them. The divers weren’t paying attention to anything but the seals. For the most part, seals don’t usually open up so fast since they are also rather cautious by nature. These seals were something else.

Close Encounter
The Friendliest
To the divers’ surprise and delight, these seals swam right up to them as if they wanted to be friends. It was a rare moment everyone got to witness thanks to the camera footage. Still, there were some odd things happening the divers were wary about.

The Friendliest
A New Friend
To the divers’ surprise, the seals got so close that they started to interact with them as well. One of the seals began nudging Grayson. It looked as if it was trying to hold his hands. The seal was holding out his flippers like it wanted Grayson to reach out with his own and play together. Grayson did, however, shake the seal’s flippers as they met face-to-face.

A New Friend
The Seal Takes The Lead
After Grayson ‘shook hands’ with the seal, it held onto his arm with its flippers. Since they’d never had such a close encounter before, Grayson and his friend just allowed the seals to take the lead. They weren’t sure exactly how to approach the situation. Most scuba divers aren’t animal trainers, surprisingly enough. Instead, Grayson continued to stay still while the seal continued rubbing its head and neck into his arm.

The Seal Takes The Lead
Odd Behavior
Normally, when divers go into the water with the intention of examining wildlife, they swim for days with a pod of seals until they finally gain the animal’s trust. It takes that amount of time for the seals to decide if the humans pursuing them are safe to approach.

Odd Behavior
Rather Strange Instincts
This is why Grayson and his diving partner didn’t make any sudden movements when they caught sight of the seals. It was strange at all that they were being approached so soon. Especially when one of the seals decided to get up close to the divers.

Rather Strange Instincts
Sign Of Aggression
When a seal gets so close to a human so soon and suddenly, it’s typically seen as a sign of aggression. Luckily, Grayson and his friend handled the situation well. So well, in fact, that the seals wanted to play.

Sign Of Aggression
Siblings
After nuzzling Grayson’s arm, the seal started play-fighting by nibbling at his suit. In the meantime, the second seal was comfortable enough around the divers to swim around them and do its own thing. Feeling a little less trusting and playful, but still super close with his sibling.

Siblings
A Whole New World
These seals swam so gracefully in the water, which only made it seem more as if they were perfectly happy in the company of humans. Normally, when they’re on land, they need to waddle around on their flippers and hop onto rocks or boats. But, being underwater is where they’re truly comfortable.

A Whole New World
Exploration Time
After seals are born, they spend at least four months with their mother before going anywhere on their own. Maybe these seals finally left the nest and were exploring their new world. These divers hoped their mom was not to close behind.

Exploration Time
No Hesitation
The playful baby seal clearly went against what was expected and swam straight towards Grayson. It immediately started sizing up the diver. However, once it realized the diver was friendly, it didn’t hesitate to see how far things would go. This seal clearly had no boundaries.

No Hesitation
Nibbling Away
The seal nibbled a little more at Grayson’s suit, it ended up making a move no one saw coming. The divers were a bit suspicious and alarmed. It took a little while for the divers to understand what was going on.

Nibbling Away
Petting Like A Dog
Grayson soon realized the seal must have enjoyed the feeling of being nuzzled. That’s when he started scratching the seal’s neck and head as if it were a little dog. The seal let Grayson continue doing this for a while.

Petting Like A Dog
The Luckiest Dive Of Their Life
Grayson and his diving partner simply couldn’t believe their luck. It was without a doubt a diving trip they would always remember. They were witnessing history. What really made it unforgettable was what the seal did next.

The Luckiest Dive Of Their Life
Reading The Signs
After the hand-flipper shake and the little nuzzle session, the divers weren’t sure how long the seals would stick around before deciding to leave. These kinds of moments are always so fleeting, so it was great that they were able to get it all on camera.

Reading The Signs
Just The Beginning
At any moment, the seals could have decided to swim away, but things turned out to just be getting started. The seal started moving as if it wanted Grayson to understand what it wanted. The seal pursued more and more until…

Just The Beginning
Couldn’t Figure It Out
While Grayson continued scratching the seal’s neck, the seal kept getting closer and closer to the seafloor as it it was trying to communicate something. It continued nibbling at Grayson’s glove, trying to get him to do what it wanted. But Grayson first needed to figure out what that was. This went on for several minutes until the seal finally made everything clear.

Couldn’t Figure It Out
Finally Figured Out
Eventually, the seal turned onto its back. By that point, it was clear what it wanted Grayson to do. It turns out that Grayson’s petting skills were so good that this seal wanted him to rub its belly! It was amazing that this seal was communicating so clearly. While this would be normal behavior for an average dog or cat, the fact that a seal likes belly rubs just goes to show how universal the feeling is among animals.

Finally Figured Out
Loving It
It turned out that Grayson’s belly-rubbing skills were so good that the seal was seen flapping its flipper over the diver’s hand in approval. It was such a sweet sight to see, especially since the seal’s flabby coat moved with the waves. The seal stayed on its back for some time, clearly enjoying himself. If anything, the seal only became more playful as he snapped back up to make another move.

Loving It
Nudging, Nibbling And Loving
However, the seal became more lively and wanted to play some more with its new friends. By that point, it started playfully nibbling at Grayson’s glove and even had his hand in its mouth! These seals were unbelievable and unlike anything, they had ever seen or even heard of before.

Nudging, Nibbling And Loving
Play More
Once the seal decided belly rubbing was over, it swam back up to face Grayson. The diver’s hand moved under the seal’s chin and started scratching it. The seal seemed to love that too, as you can clearly see it smiling contentedly in the video.

Play More
The Second Seal
In the video, Grayson looks at his diving partner slightly concerned. The more the seal started biting at his hand, he looked more concerned. Luckily, the bites don’t look like they were forceful. It seemed like the seal was just trying to play with the diver.

The Second Seal
Let Them Be
Grayson then decided to let the seal do its thing. Meanwhile, the second seal thought it was his turn to get some attention and it started sniffing at Grayson’s feet. Maybe he was becoming more trusting or wanting some attention too after seeing the other seal being all loved up.

Let Them Be
Playtime’s Over
Eventually, the first seal got tired of all the playing. It was clearly grateful for the belly rubs and scratches, but as the diver continued petting its coat, the seal started swimming away. By that point, its friend noticed and knew it was time to go.

Playtime’s Over
Snooze You Lose
The divers watched the seals as they swam away, but were so excited about the entire experience. They could not believe what had just happened to them. Such a pity for the other seal who was not so trusting he was for sure about to join in on the action. Of course, they could have never guessed how just how far their encounter would reach online.

Snooze You Lose
He Was Loving It
Soon enough, Grayson’s video gained international buzz, and of course, he got asked about the experience. He told the media outlets he was “absolutely loving it” the whole time it was happening. “I had seen other seals in the water but they just buzzed past us. None was as inquisitive as [this seal] was, and none as friendly,” Grayson told the Manchester Evening News.

He Was Loving It
In Their World
Most people wouldn’t know how to react in such a situation, but Grayson and his friend handled everything just the way they should have. “We were told just to sit on the bottom of the kelp but the more still we were the more inquisitive this seal was because we were in their world,” Grayson said.

In Their World
New To It All
Despite the fact that they tried not to look threatening, their stillness must have been intriguing for the seals. These new pups were curious about the open waters and more trusting than what the divers knew but something led them to feel as if they could trust the divers.

New To It All
“I’ve Never Known Anything Like That”
Grayson admits that despite being an experienced diver, he never really had this particular kind of experience, especially with wild seals in the ocean. This was something every diver dreamed of and what he said truly underlined the experience. Read on to see…

“I’ve Never Known Anything Like That”
Nowhere In The World Has This Occurred
“The grey seal came across and had five minutes with me, kind of thing. Then another was climbing up my leg. I’m an experienced diver but I have never known anything like that. I’ve been all over the world, to Mexico and Cuba, to dive with great big mantras and sharks,” he added.

Nowhere In The World Has This Occurred
Once In A Lifetime Experience
While Grayson and his diving partner were startled at first, that’s most likely due to the fact that they weren’t expecting the seals to interact with them. “I’m not one to frighten easy,” Grayson explained, “If the truth be told, I’m a bit of an [adrenaline junkie]. Before that, I was into sky-diving, I had done aerobatics. I tend to live life on the edge. But this was certainly up there with anything I have ever done.”

Once In A Lifetime Experience
Seals And Humans
Seals are known for attacking humans that come a bit too close to them. However, this is generally during breeding periods. Additionally, these divers were lucky these pups were unaccompanied as parents would attack to protect their young.

Seals And Humans
Hunting Of Seals
Hunting seals is illegal in many locations however, it is considered a sport in some places as countries use them for meat or oil. Fisherman, unfortunately, do this so that they have less competition and less to deal with in the ocean. This is truly terrible after we see just how friendly these creatures can be.

Hunting Of Seals
Remembering Nature
Humans compete for land with seals, we pollute water which negatively affects their breathing and habitat as a whole. It is important to remember we are invading their habitat and the part that these cute creatures play in the ecosystem. Maybe then, we can study them more and witness more incredible moments just like this one.

Remembering Nature
Discovering The Isles of Scilly
Grayson had been an avid fan of scuba diving for a long period, but he had never dived around the Isle of Scilly! He was aware that this area was one of the most popular areas to dive in the UK, which ultimately proved to be true after the experience he had! Typically more well-known for housing various shipwrecks and tragedies, it is unbeknownst to many what will be found deep down, just like Grayson experienced!

Discovering The Isles Of Scilly
If you enjoyed this story, keep reading to discover the exciting story of three normal friends enjoying a fishing day, or so they thought..
A Surprising Find
3 pals, Mallory Harrigan, Allan Russell and Cliff Russell often partook in fishing extravaganzas together. They were such fans, that they decided to purchase a boat together so that they could open a commercial fishing business. They were experienced fishermen for sure, and knew exactly which fish the Canadian waters had to offer. Unexpected however, was exactly what could happen when they took to the water every day.

A Surprising Find
Friendship First, Business Second
The trio were more than colleagues, business partners; they were best buds. Whenever one of them needed something, the other two would be there to pick them up and help however they could. Often issues arise when you work with friends, this never affected them however. On a daily basis, they would come home with bruises, bumps and all from their demanding job, but they remained determined and loved the job they did.

Friendship First, Business Second
An Eventful Morning
It began as any other day, but Mallory had a special feeling about today. Who knew she would be right, and everyone’s life would forever be different? Despite not knowing exactly what was in the works, she felt something, and arrived early in order to prepare the boat. Once Cliff and Allan arrived, the friends progressed through their morning pre-launch checklist. It was extremely important that everything was properly prepared prior to leaving, as returning would waste valuable time.

An Eventful Morning
Departure
The daily prep wasn’t too difficult, it just required time and patience. It was easy for them, as they chatted and told jokes as they did the necessary tasks. Despite having been friends for a long time, and meeting on a daily basis, every morning it truly felt like they hadn’t seen each other in years. A seemingly calm morning followed as the trio set sail. They already knew where was the best area to catch some crab.

Departure
Let The Fishing Begin!
After reaching the ideal spot, the team turned the engine of the boat off and let it sit idly. The spot they used was reliable and always had many crabs. They then dropped their lines, allowing the cages to drag on the seafloor. Crab season was coming to it’s end unfortunately. Previous weeks had seen impressive hauls and they were hoping this would be the best and most fruitful one to end the season. This had already been their most successful year to date and they hoped that this catch would be their most successful too.

Let The Fishing Begin!
A Good First Haul
The cages were now firmly planked in the water, and required two workers to man them- ensuring they didn’t get tangled. The remaining person would stay and steer the boat. It was a daily routine they knew very well by this stage. The first cages finally came back up and they were ecstatic! The spot proved to be as reliable as ever and they were very much on course for a successful day. High-fives flew around as the cages were emptied and they prepared themselves to go again.

A Good First Haul
Next Stop
A successful day thus far, the day was going very well. The three friends knew they were on course to break their crab-fishing record. They were finished at their first location, so they turned the engine on and set off towards their next spot. The further they got however, the more dangerous it seemed on the waters. Seal colonies could be seen sitting on icebergs and surprisingly there we no birds at all. The beautiful views however masked the hidden dangers surely coming their way.

Next Stop
Yikes! An Iceberg!
It was not a complete surprise to see icebergs in the Labrador Sea, as they knew that icebergs often floated freely. Travelling on autopilot however, could end up being a costly error. A wrong turn could have deadly consequences, for sure. Allan was the member on lookout, and he noticed something on top of an iceberg. After pointing it out to Cliff and Mallory, no-one could quite point out what it was. Mallory assumed that it was a seal, resting away from the rest of the colony. Allan thinks differently however.

Yikes! An Iceberg!
Theory Clashes
Despite Cliff agreeing with Mallory’s theory, Allan didn’t buy it. During their adventures they had seen many animals in all sorts of areas at times. It wasn’t a sighting so out of the ordinary, so they questioned why Allan wouldn’t let it go.
Allan just had a feeling that something wasn’t quite right with the theory. He didn’t think it moved around like a seal and after looking closer using binoculars, the other two actually agreed with him.

Theory Clashes
Moving Closer
The group was aware that in order to achieve their most successful day, they had to continue with the task at hand. However, they struggled to ignore Allan’s find and couldn’t focus on the tasks of the day with the mystery remaining unsolved. They knew they had to go closer to the iceberg to discover just what it was. As the boat neared the iceberg, the wind picked up, as did the chill in the air. It was at this point they noticed fur on the animal. Wet fur. The animal will have been so cold, and they knew they had to find out what the animal was; putting their fishing trip had to be put on hold until the situation was resolved.

Moving Closer
A Cautious Approach
Not knowing what they were dealing with, they approached the iceberg quite apprehensively, remaining in the boat. Firstly, they didn’t know what kind of animal they were approaching, but they were also going off-course and prepared to venture into new waters. Allan remained faithful that they were doing the correct moral thing. Mallory and Cliff weren’t as convinced, but agreed that the situation needed to be investigated. An animal in danger needed help. If they did nothing, it would surely perish.

A Cautious Approach
Further Movement
Moving slowly through the water, the trio were on the lookout for potential dangers. Floating ice, in large quantities could damage the boat. Leaving themselves stranded would help nobody, especially not this poor animal. Making matters worse, the waves had also picked up. Mallory indicated to the group that they had to be very careful moving forward now. Despite the excitement, it was a dangerous volatile situation.

Further Movement
Dangerous Waters, Stronger Winds
Without any warning, a strong gust of wind came into the area. This made their navigation even more difficult. Scarier for the group, the wind being so strong caused the iceberg to move! How would the animal react? It was at this moment that the group were worried about far more than ice, but the wellbeing of the animal too. If the animal jumped off of the iceberg out of fear, it would surely be lethal. Keeping her eyes glued to the animal, she could almost certainly identify it if she was able to get just a little bit closer.

Dangerous Waters, Stronger Winds
An Unlikely Chase
Danger only increased for the trio. They had no choice but to chase the lone iceberg. Their safety was in jeopardy, as was the life of the animal pacing back and forth on top of the iceberg. In order to keep up with the iceberg, they had to move quickly. They had to do this however, while remaining aware of their water surroundings. Night was slowly creeping up on them too. Quite a pickle they found themselves in!

An Unlikely Chase
Identification
Finally, they were close enough to the animal to almost see what it was. It had four legs, and resembled a dog. This was certainly nobody’s lost pet though. It was soaked with water and couldn’t stop shivering. It was at this time, the three friends knew they had no choice but to use all their power to rescue this animal, even if their own situation took a turn towards the risky side.

Identification
Clarity!
It was at this point that they were close enough, and could finally see what the animal was for sure. It was an Arctic Fox! Despite wondering how it managed to leave itself quite so stranded, it was weak and birds began to circle; time was of the essence. The fox might freeze to death, and the birds seemingly anticipated this! It was now the responsibility of Allan, Cliff and Mallory to ensure that the fox lived another day.
A Daring Rescue
Time was running out and the group needed to work together to agree on a plan to save the fox. Time was of the essence, and they hadn’t even considered one vital aspect. Would the fox even come with them? Would it trust them? No-one could possibly guess how the fox would interact with humans. Unfortunately, despite their good intentions, they may not even be able to help.

A Daring Rescue
The Plan Of Action
The fox was never going to just walk aboard, the friends needed to come up with a plan to entice the fox to come onto the boat. They held their arms out welcomingly for it, but it ran away. It obviously had nowhere to go, and stared blankly at the people trying their hardest to save it. They wouldn’t leave without ensuring they had done all they could to help, and it wouldn’t join them.

The Plan Of Action
A Waiting Game
They were quite patient with the fox. Despite it showing no interest in joining Cliff, Mallory and Allan, they waited nonetheless. Just when the three had considered leaving, the fox finally took it’s first steps towards the boat. Would it jump however? Perhaps it knew that the humans were his only option for potential safety.

A Waiting Game
