Lost in Translation
Francesca’s grandfather exchanged a bewildered and worried gaze with her. Sophie spoke in terrible English, her sentences jumbled and tinged with an odd accent. “Slow down, sweetheart,” Francesca whispered. Nods of encouragement greeted Sophie’s attempts at explanation, but it was clear they were not understanding. Everyone found the communication barrier difficult, and the tension in the room was tangible.

Even with the maze of words, Sophie was able to convey subtle yet meaningful details. She stammered, seeming as though she had forgotten what she had said. “We… walk… many days,” she said. Her hands made nebulous walking motions. A terrifying adventure was glimpsed by Francesca and her grandfather, but the whole story remained elusive. The mystery around what transpired grew with every piece of information she shared.
