Launching Her Career
She studied architecture for one year at the local university but eventually left to pursue modeling full-time. She went on to change her name from Melanija Knavs to Melania Knauss. Not only that, but she also headed to Milan and Paris for work. A little while later, an agency owner took her to New York. Over there, she appeared on the pages of magazines like Vogue, Sports Illustrated, and Vanity Fair.

In 1992, she finished in second place when she joined the “Look of the Year” contest held by Jana Magazine. The event in question took place in Ljubljana, the capital of her home country. The participants who made it to the top three each received an international modeling contract.
