Nightcrawler was initially written in a way that is focused on a number of tricky themes. The film wanted to show the typically unbalanced nature of unethical journalism in order to satisfy the demands of the customers. Another interesting topic it discussed was the lengths some people will go to get the scoop. It did not take long before he was able to develop this film into its own universe by working on a follow-up under the title Annabelle. The spinoff had a budget of $6.5 million, which is pretty low. Nonetheless, the haunted doll horror film earned $257 million at the box office.
