As he gave the wallet to the authorities, Jake was aware that this meant giving away his own freedom. Even so, he cared about the safety of other people more. The only thing that mattered to him at the time was for the cops to see this object. Like him, they were also shocked when they checked it out.

The moment he saw this, he was filled with guilt and shame. He could not believe that he did such a thing to such a vulnerable person! In the end, this realization made him turn himself in.
