Rapidly Declining
During the ‘90s, records show that the tortoises had a population of about 12 million, which is still on the low side of things. By 2010, the numbers have dipped below 6 million. There are now only approximately 3 million of them.
On The Bright Side
Even though the tortoises had been kept in such horrendous conditions, the team was glad they recovered thousands of these animals. A lot of them were in pretty bad shape, so they needed to take a lot of care when they took them somewhere safer.
