He told Christopher that there was no doubt in his mind that they were standing in a gold mine right now. He could barely take his eyes off of the gold walls, and it was clear that the gold was completely untouched. It was also quite apparent that the miners working here abandoned their project instead of finishing it. They now wanted to figure out why that was.

Rudall had heard plenty of rumors surrounding the abandonment of gold mines at the beginning of the century, though he didn’t know if any of them were reliable. He had never seen a gold mine before the one he was standing in right now. Christopher couldn’t possibly imagine why the gold miners left the job half-finished and abandoned the project, but he wanted to find out.
