Mulholland Drive
Mulholland Drive is not the first, nor is it the only, film to take a shot at perfecting the idea of surrealism, but David Lynch perfectly translates the idea of surrealism into this film. He blurs the lines between what is a dream and what is reality, which creates a disturbing yet incredible film. The film is so great that even the BBC named it the greatest film of the 21st century.
Her
Spike Jonze wrote, directed, and produced this science-fiction romance that ended up being a top hit. It is set in the future, but still the relatable future. The film follows Theodore Twombly, played by Joaquin Phoenix, through his recent divorce. He tries to mend his broken heart by buying an operating system, but he ends up falling in love with it. There is so much to play with through this movie- the emotions, the camerawork, the colors, everything- and the cast and crew simply hit it out of the park.
