Vendors were offering rats for sale as lambs, according to a Radio-Canada investigation from early 2013. Around 900 persons were arrested as a result of the incident. There was also 20,000 kg of rat meat seized.

Beef costs more than twice as much as pork in China, according to the website TravelChine. To save money, many companies simply inject borax-based food additives into the pig to give it the appearance of beef. The food additive is actually a highly effective insecticide that should not be consumed.
