While joining the modern world may seem to outsiders to be a simple option, a teen who leaves would be permanently cut off from their family and community. That helps to understand why so many people (over 90%) want to stay in the church.

Exceptions Regarding Technology
Although the majority of Amish families have strict technology laws, some are more lenient than others. Tractors, electric refrigerators, running water bathtubs, and propane gas, for example, are allowed by the Kalona Amish. Cell phones are also permitted in some communities.
