No Way Out
The Romanian government became concerned that Nadia would try to escape and defect to America too, and therefore set up a travel ban. Her phone calls were all monitored and her letters were all checked. The only exception to the ban was to fly to Cuba and two other competitions in Europe.
Throwing In The Towel
In 1984, Nadia decided that her time as a gymnast had come to a close. She didn’t leave the sport though; she became Romania’s national gymnastics coach. This new position meant that she would still travel around the world for different competitions.
