“She was always on the phone with lawyers…,” her friend Neff said of Anna’s foundation plans. They were always downplaying her. ‘Anna, you’re trying to make something worth this much worth that much, and that’s just not how it works,’ she says. When the two friends went out to dinner one night and Anna tried to pay with about 12 different credit cards, Neff realized she was having financial problems. Anna appeared to be slipping in her lavish cash flow floating through life. Some concerns arose because she hadn’t yet paid for her room at the 11 Howard Hotel, and they didn’t have a card on file for her. The hotel initially ignored Anna’s failure to submit a card, treating her as a valued guest. Because the hotel owner owned the property she was attempting to buy, she was also connected as a potential ‘client.’ As a result, the hotel decided to accept a wire transfer as payment for her room. However, no payment from her was received after more than a month.

Because Neff was friends with Anna, the hotel asked her to handle the situation. The total amount owed was more than $30,000. Neff had faith in Anna’s ability to pay and went to speak with her about the problem. Anna responded with an empty promise that the transfer was on its way. Anna Delvey’s life began to unravel from this point on. There was no turning back now. The hotel eventually received a wire transfer for $30,000 for her room, so Anna resumed her social status and assumed everything was fine. However, because she continued to stay at the hotel, they required a credit card in the future, and her bills were steadily increasing. They demanded that she present a valid card and even threatened to change her room code and kick her out.
