Giovanni Battista Sidotti

Apostolic missionary Giovanni Battista Sidotti was born in 1668. He was sent to Japan to spread Christianity there. It was a very dangerous mission in those days. He disguised himself as a samurai but failed to convince them. They captured him and locked him up until his death in 1714. Many people think of him as “the last missionary”.

His remains were discovered relatively intact when compared to other historical figures. In 2014, they found his body during a 2 million-yen excavation project. His remains made it possible to work on this recreation of him. The skull was damaged but not enough to deter the forensic anthropologists working on the project.
