When asked about his career choice, Elliott said that he watched a lot of films while he was growing up. This fact was said to have increased his interest in the movie industry. He also mentioned that while at school, he did many things that had to do with acting which gave him the vision to pursue his career.

At first, Sam was set to play the part of Robert E. Lee in Gettysburg. However, a part of the cast was said to have changed all that by threatening to leave if Sam got the part. It did not affect Sam very much, however, as he was quite fascinated by the role of Brigadier General John Buford a lot more.
