The Patriot

This film occurs simultaneously with the events of the southern theater of the American Revolutionary War. The fictitious character Benjamin Martin is depicted as the leader of the Colonial Militia after a British officer murders his son. The film highlights his wartime career and his significant role in the defeat of the Battle of Cowpens. During the creation and production of the film, director Emmerich and his crew corresponded with experts at the Smithsonian Institution regarding sets, props, and costumes. Although the story itself was fictional, they intended to keep the background factual.
