He found an old camera on the lowest shelf! It was, however, not just any camera; it was a Zeiss Ikon 520/2. He was surprised to see that it was in excellent condition after closer inspection.

Dr. August Nagel designed the camera, which was manufactured by Zeiss Ikon in Germany. The 520/2 is a one-of-a-kind camera that uses 120-roll film and a vintage Tessar lens. Any photographer, especially Martijn, would be overjoyed with something of this stature.

A total of 27 children and teenagers went missing between 1918 and 1924. He had read this man’s personal journals and knew he owned a camera, which was rare and expensive back then. The camera, however, went missing.

Finally, there was nothing left for him to do but develop the roll of film and see for himself. Martijn is a go-getter who is particularly interested in unexplained things, so what he did next is only natural.

He examined the roll of the film once more with care. On the side, the word “EXPOSE” was inscribed. “I assumed it indicated the roll had been exposed and utilized,” Martijn explained. He was well aware that this was an antique camera.

It was impossible to determine the film’s age. He began his homework by researching the film and its release date. He experienced shivers all over when he discovered the date.

“I found out the camera was built around 1924,” he said. This would make the camera around 89 years old! Given the film’s age, it was doubtful that any of the photographs would have survived the years. What a pity!

Martijn, though, knew it was still worth a try, so he phoned his photographer buddy Johan Hollerman. Unfortunately, Martijn received some unpleasant news after speaking with Johan.

His acquaintance warned him that developing such an ancient film would be difficult, but after Martijn persuaded him, Johan agreed to give it an attempt. Clearly, the mystery that awaited him here piqued his interest as well. Did the visuals last across the decades? It was merely a matter of developing them.

Johan and Martijn couldn’t tell if there were any photographs to salvage straight away because the roll of film couldn’t be opened or exposed to sunshine. They were determined to find out, which is how they got up in Johan’s dimly lit kitchen on a Tuesday morning.

The faint outlines on the photo negatives when they finished processing the film astounded them. Their main concern now was what they would discover in the extremely ancient photographs.

Martijn hung the negatives to dry in the shower, then began drying them with a blow drier to see if the images remained intact. They couldn’t close Pandora’s box now because they had already opened it. The only option was to wait and see what happened. It was time to go on to the next stage once they were dry.

Fortunately for Martijn, the risk was well worth it! He was quite fortunate, as the blowdryer had no effect on the image quality. The visuals were getting increasingly apparent as the film was processed. History was about to unfold right in front of their eyes.

The men obtained a projector to look at the images after the negatives were completely dry. They had four different images in their hands. They were hazy, but they managed to find what the photographer had previously captured.

They came upon a woman who appeared to be a ghost from the past, staring back at them. She was standing right next to a mountainous pathway in the photo. The two gentlemen were enthralled.

Instead, an old guy was highlighted in the fourth shot. He was carrying the camera case over his shoulder when the photo was shot. They came to the conclusion that this was the woman’s photographer.
