They had loved the idea of sleeping under the stars, but it felt intimidating today. The sky above was an alien canopy, impassable and huge. Francesca rolled around on the uneven ground, attempting to find a place to settle. The nighttime in the bush was not like any other in the city; it was darker, richer, and brimming with the existence of invisible beings. Every sound seemed to hint at something unknown.

Every sound of leaves rustling and a limb cracking while they were lying in their makeshift beds gave Francesca and her grandfather sudden fits of awareness. What might be moving just beyond the ring of firelight was vividly pictured in their minds. It was as though the jungle’s darkness was a living thing, observing and waiting. Their hearts raced at the sound of every unknown sound in the darkness that shrouded them.
