The mother hadn’t finished cleaning up after her new baby. Her constant licking of the befuddled calf’s face and neck suggests that he’s already dozing out. We must confess that giving a young deer such a rigorous bath can be taxing. That is until she opens her mouth even wider, leaving the photographer to feel that he has seen enough.

A deer grows agitated after its teeth are knocked out. The youngster is naturally scared of the lioness, as much as we’d want to believe she’s kind. They have the potential to cause a lot of damage with only one bite. But we hadn’t anticipated this tiny infant attempting to leave his new mother!
