During the World Championships in 1979, Nadia was sent to hospital after she cut her wrist on a metal grip buckle. The doctors who treated her, advised her not to return to the games but she defied them and went back to win the first gold medal for her team.
Moscow Summer Olympics
Even though Nadia and Béla didn’t have much time, they trained for 5 intensive weeks to prepare her for the competition. Being in Russia posed some issues for other competing countries. For example, The United States didn’t send a team in order to protest the USSR’s invasion of Afghanistan. But the Russians had other worries on their minds – namely, Nadia Comăneci.
